The kitchen is arguably the most functional room in the home. This is where we gather to spend time with our children or our parents; it’s where we help the kids with homework and prepare meals on a daily basis. We all enjoy a well-made kitchen for a variety of reasons. Today we want to talk about why you should always choose functionality over style when remodeling your kitchen.
Cabinetry and Storage
Ample storage is extremely important, but the placement of the storage is vital to the functionality of the kitchen. Silverware and utensils should be within easy reach of the stove or food preparation area to make it easier to grab a knife or other utensil as needed. Coffee cups and other coffee-related items should be stored near the area that houses the coffee maker. Bakeware should be stored near the stove for easy access. Carefully consider how you use your kitchen on a daily basis and design your new kitchen around that idea.
Countertop Space
Countertop space is often at a premium in today’s households. We all have several small appliances such as the food processor, blender, toaster oven, coffee maker, espresso maker… the list goes on. So create specific areas for these items, and consider storing them behind cabinet doors to keep the countertop cleaner and clutter-free.
Stovetop or Full Range?
Do you need a simple stovetop style cooktop or a full range that includes burners and a single oven? Or do you want a more industrial style kitchen with multiple cooktops and multiple ovens so you can prepare full meals and desserts simultaneously? You do deserve to have the kitchen you want, so make it as functional as you need it.
Kitchen Island or Extended Bar?
The kitchen island or bar area can add valuable countertop space to the kitchen. Consider a mobile island if you need the added countertop space, but don’t want an island in the way at all times. An extended bar area adds dual functionality by providing a place to eat as well as much-needed countertop space.
Placement of Appliances
Choose appliances that you love, but always choose appliances that fit well into your kitchen. Appliances innately add a lot of functionality to your kitchen, so make sure you also get the style you want. Your kitchen will be much more functional if you make sure to abide by the golden triangle of kitchen design. This design principle indicates that the three primary zones should be within easy reach – the stove, the sink, and the refrigerator.
